Details: During the informal meeting of the ministers of justice of the Council of Europe member states in Riga, the European Commissioner noted that the EU is obliged to ensure meaningful processes for the payment of reparations for the damage that Russia caused to the people of Ukraine during the war.
Quote: "In this sense, I am happy to announce that the EU will participate in covering the necessary costs for the establishment of a Register of Damage, in particular in the ordering of relevant premises in The Hague and in the development of a digital platform," Reynders said.
In addition, the EU considers the creation of an international Register of Damage to be the first important step towards the creation of a future international instrument for the payment of financial compensation for Ukraine.
The European Commissioner added that in view of the unprecedented scale of international support for Ukraine, the EU is making efforts to coordinate all international initiatives to bring the Russian Federation to justice.
Reminder: Markiyan Kliuchkovskyi, the founder and partner of the Asters law firm and a member of the advisory board of the School of Law of the Ukrainian Catholic University, was appointed the executive director of the Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
On 17 February, the Government of the Netherlands officially agreed in principle to Ukraine's proposal to create an international organisation in The Hague – the Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
