Moscow sees no preconditions for talks with Kyiv
The Kremlin has confirmed that it is not ready to end the war against Ukraine through negotiations.
Source: Russian President's spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by TASS, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news outlet
Quote from Peskov: "There have been no prerequisites for resuming negotiations with Ukraine, and there are none at the moment. Kyiv will have to start negotiations with Russia by recognising the realities that have emerged since March 2022."
Previously: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on 10 September that peace talks with Russia were not available now, but as soon as Russian President Vladimir Putin was interested in them, the Ukrainian government would join.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saya that now is a "bad moment" for talks with Russia, as the counteroffensive is underway and Russia sees Ukraine's difficulties on the battlefield. In his opinion, Putin is trying to exhaust Ukraine, but he is "losing in a long war".
Background: In 2014, Russia occupied the Crimean peninsula and part of Ukraine's east, and in February-March 2022, it occupied another part of Ukraine’s south and east, while Ukraine managed to liberate territories in the north and centre of the country.
The Ukrainian government has repeatedly stated that the war will end with the liberation of all territories that belonged to Ukraine as of 1991, not 23 February 2022.
