Water areas of Russian Black Sea ports declared zones of military threat by Ukraine

Ukraine has posted a coastal report declaring the water areas of six Russian ports in the Black Sea to be under military threat on Friday, 4 August.

The message specifies that the water areas in question are the internal and external roadsteads of the ports of Anapa, Novorossiysk, Gelendzhik, Tuapse, Sochi and Taman.

The basis for this announcement is Order No 5 of the Ukrainian Navy, dated 4 August 2023.
Background:
- After withdrawing from the grain deal, the Russian Federation announced that it will consider all vessels heading to Ukrainian seaports from 20 July to be potential carriers of military cargo.
- At the same time, Ukraine mirrored the statement, warning that it would consider all vessels bound for Russian ports or occupied Ukrainian ports as carrying military goods.
- A Russian chemical tanker SIG was damaged in the Kerch Strait due to an uncrewed surface vessel attack on the evening of 4 August. Russia claimed that no fuel leak from the tanker has been recorded, according to Russian media.
- Later, Interfax Ukraine, citing a source in the Security Service of Ukraine, reported that the SSU was behind the special operation.
