Zelenskyy thanked Christie and US politicians and government officials, in particular Congress and President Joe Biden, for supporting Ukraine, and emphasised the importance of further strengthening aid.
Quote from Zelenskyy: "The United States is a leader, providing us with the greatest support on the battlefield for our Armed Forces. And, of course, in the financial sector, which is also powerful support," the president said.
Christie, in turn, said that he wanted to see the situation in Ukraine with his own eyes and share it with the American public, which is "extremely supportive of Ukraine," the Office of the President quotes.
Background:
- Before the meeting with Zelenskyy, Christie visited cities in Kyiv Oblast damaged by the Russian offensive at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, including Bucha.
- Christie is one of the representatives of the pro-Ukrainian wing of the current candidates from the US Republican Party, who has sharply criticised the pro-Russian statements of Donald Trump, the current favourite in the internal party race.
- Chris Christie became the second candidate for nomination from the US Republican Party to visit Ukraine. At the end of June, Mike Pence, former Vice President of the Trump administration, also visited Ukraine.
