Despite the fact that military service in Russia now offers good earning opportunities, the Kremlin is continuing to experience problems with recruiting new people to the ranks of the army.

Details: Analysts note that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian authorities have been trying to make service in the Russian army financially attractive, hoping to attract more people.

For example, they recall the words of Vladimir Putin on 4 February 2022, shortly before the invasion, when he said that lieutenants receive 81,200 roubles a month. However, in October 2022, Putin promised even conscripted soldiers would receive 195,000 roubles a month.

Military personnel of junior ranks who are involved in the war against Ukraine now receive more than 200,000 roubles a month, UK Defence Intelligence notes.

Quote: "This is over 2.7 times the Russian national average salary of 72,851 roubles. [...] It is highly likely that the salary and additional benefits are a strong incentive for personnel to join up, especially to those from the poorer areas of Russia. However, Russia is still unlikely to meet its targets for recruiting volunteers to the ranks."
