First trailer for Sean Penn's film about war in Ukraine released
The first trailer for Superpower, a documentary about the Russian-Ukrainian war by American actor and director Sean Penn, has been released. The film had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this year.
"Superpower tells the story of Sean Penn travelling to Ukraine to learn more about Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the comedian turned president. It was supposed to be an entertaining film, but it turned into a historical document," is stated in the description under the film's official trailer.
Penn made the documentary about Ukraine with producer and director Aaron Kaufman. Work on the film began before Russia's full-scale invasion, in early 2021. At that time, Penn even visited the Ukrainian military in Donbas.
It so happened that in February 2022, when the Russians launched their major offensive, Penn and Kaufman were in Kyiv: "When Penn was brought to a secret bunker in the President's Office, the Russian invasion began. Penn was talking to President Zelenskyy when explosions rocked the city. He became an involuntary witness to this historic battle between David and Goliath."
In the trailer, we see footage of Penn and Zelenskyy talking from a shelter and video of Penn visiting positions on the front and meeting ordinary Ukrainians who have defended their country.
"Ukrainians will win. The question is at what cost," Penn says off-screen.
The documentary Superpower about the war in Ukraine will be released on Paramount+ on 18 September.
