Background:

  • A small plane crashed in the Bologovsky district of Tver Oblast, Russia, on the evening of 23 August. Rosaviatsiya, the Federal Air Transport Agency, said Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was listed as having been on board.
  • The Telegram channel Grey Zone, which is close to the Wagner Group, claimed that Yevgeny Prigozhin's plane was shot down by air defence fire.
  • There are reports that an act of terrorism on board is being considered as one theory behind Prigozhin's plane crash.
  • The Telegram channel VCHK-OGPU, which is affiliated with the Wagner Group, reported that the bodies of Prigozhin and Utkin [Prigozhin's deputy - ed.] had been found and identified. Grey Zone added that Prigozhin had "died as a result of the actions of Russian traitors".
  • The Russian media detected symbolism in the fact that the plane crash occurred on 23 August, exactly two months after the Wagner mutiny. Prigozhin announced his "march for justice" on the evening of 23 June.
