Since 10 August, the occupation authorities have banned residents of the occupied part of Kherson Oblast from using any unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

Source: RIA Novosti, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news outlet, citing a decree by Volodymyr Saldo, Kremlin-appointed puppet leader of Kherson Oblast

Details: Saldo banned the use of all types of unmanned aerial vehicles "in order to strengthen public order and ensure public safety in Kherson Oblast" from 10 August 2023 and until a "special order" is issued.

Only occupation authorities and organisations are allowed to use drones, and even then, a decision of the so-called task force is required.

Previously: Last year, while the city of Kherson was being liberated by Ukrainian Defence Forces, the occupiers prohibited civilians from using boats on the Dnipro River.

Background:

  • Both Russia and Ukraine actively use drones for reconnaissance and strikes. In particular, Ukrainian defenders are directing drones on occupied and Russian territories, thus causing air defence to be activated in the Russian Federation.
  • Ukraine's Armed Forces have begun using uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) to attack the Crimean Bridge, Russian ships and tankers
  • Vasyl Maliuk, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, called such special operations completely legal and advised Russian troops to leave the territorial waters and territory of Ukraine.
  • The Security Service of Ukraine showed how the Sea Baby surface drones look, and Vasyl Maliuk said that they are made at an underground production facility in Ukraine.
  • The Russian army is training its soldiers to repel the attacks of USVs and counteract saboteurs in the Black and Azov Seas, the Military Media Center stated.
