Details: The Georgian ambassador confirmed that he had met with the deputy minister at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, who asked him to leave the country within 48 hours to hold consultations on the issue of Saakashvili.
Quote: "Of course we agreed, because it was a demand and request of the President of Ukraine," Zakarashvili explained.
Details: He added that he explained to Kyiv the official position of Tbilisi, in particular its denial of inappropriate treatment of the ex-president of Georgia.
Quote: "It is noted that, of course, this event hinders the development of bilateral relations and, accordingly, creates certain problems, in particular for communication," the diplomat said, adding that Georgia will continue to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Background:
- After the last appearance of Saakashvili in an extremely exhausted state in court, Ukraine summoned the Georgian ambassador and asked him to return to Tbilisi "for consultations".
- Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was outraged by Zelenskyy's reaction, but at the same time, he stressed that Tbilisi wants to "remain friendly" with the Ukrainian authorities.
- Saakashvili has been in custody since his secret return to Georgia before the 2021 local elections, and recently his health condition has significantly worsened.
