The Director General of the IAEA, Raphael Grossi, is concerned about the safety situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) after the power outage from the main 750 kV high-voltage line on 4 July.

It is noted that the disconnection of the Dnipro transmission line demonstrated the fragility of the station's security situation.

"This time the plant avoided a complete loss of all external power, but the latest power line cut again demonstrates the precarious nuclear safety and security situation at the plant," Grossi said in the communique.

Background:

  • At night, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost power supply from the main external power transmission line with a voltage of 750 kV. The power supply was switched to backup power.
  • Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, it has six VVER-1,000 power units. The station has not been generating electricity since 11 September 2022. Five reactors are in cold mode, one, the fifth, is in hot shutdown mode to meet the station's own needs.
