Children have to learn. Help students of Mykolaiv Lyceum to complete shelter

Tuesday, 25 July 2023, 19:23

Russia has destroyed hundreds of schools throughout Ukraine during the war. Most of it goes to the front-line oblasts, in particular, Mykolaiv Oblast. Well-equipped shelters are necessary to secure the lives of students and educators, as well as to provide schools with the opportunity to work offline fully.

As part of the To School Again campaign, Ukrainska Pravda, together with the International Charitable Foundation savED, announces the raising of funds for the building of a shelter for the Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 55, which in the new academic year should become a key school for a large area of the city.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the lyceum was lucky to remain almost unscathed. However, children must study mostly in a distance format due to the lack of a bomb shelter.

Quote: "Children dream of returning to the once-ordinary joys in the "live" mode: discussions about bullfighters from Vasiukivka during the lessons of Ukrainian literature, Kahoot! Games in mathematics, discussions of fresh TikToks among classmates, whom they missed very much.

Due to the limited budgetary possibilities of the lyceum, only shelter is not enough to ensure children's full access to education," the foundation emphasises.

We aim to restore access to offline education for more than just 1,176 lyceum students. With a safe shelter, the lyceum can provide access to education for 3,000 Ukrainian children, including IDPs, in two shifts.

Currently, the basement of the educational institution, which can save the lives of thousands of children and teachers in the event of another Russian shelling, looks like this:

UAH 4 million (approximately USD 108,000) is needed to equip a high-quality shelter at the Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 55. These funds will go to the capital repair of the school's basement under the bomb shelter, which will meet the requirements of the State Emergency Service.

The shelters will be arranged according to the principle of building back better, which consists in creating a fundamentally new, comfortable and safe educational space, savED emphasised.
