U.S. allocates US$250 million to support agriculture in Ukraine

Samantha Power, the Chief of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has said that Ukraine will receive an additional US$250 million to support agriculture, which suffers from blocking grain exports due to the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion.

Details: During her visit to Odesa, the head of USAID said that the new assistance package will cover the development of agricultural infrastructure and the expansion of other grain export routes.

She also called on other governments and the private sector to provide another US$250 million to help farmers affected by Russia's actions and boost Ukraine's economy in the long term.

Background: 

  • Prior to that, Power visited the headquarters of the State Emergency Service in Kyiv, where she announced more than US$500 million in humanitarian aid and handed over US$2.3 million worth of equipment to the State Emergency Service.
  • On 17 July, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov announced the suspension of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Russia also announced the withdrawal of the shipping security guarantees under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which ceased to be in effect on Monday, 17 July.
  • At the same time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he believed that the Russian president actually wanted to extend the so-called "grain deal" and would talk to him about it.
  • Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said that the UN and Türkiye must have the political will to continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
