Russian forces carried out a large-scale drone attack on southern Ukraine on the night of 10-11 July, launching several waves of Shahed-136 drones from the Black Sea.

Nataliia Humeniuk, spokeswoman for Operational Command Pivden (South) said on the national 24/7 newscast that Ukraine’s defence forces were expecting a Russian attack because several cargo planes from Tehran had recently arrived in Moscow, likely carrying a new shipment of Shahed drones.

Previously: During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Istanbul, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Türkiye, said that he wanted to extend the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which guarantees the secure transit of Ukrainian grain, by three months rather than two.

The grain deal is set to expire on 17 July. It is a lifeline for Ukrainian agricultural exports, which has allowed millions of tonnes of grain and other agricultural products to be exported from Ukraine in the past 11 months.

Stopping transit could raise global food prices, given Ukraine’s importance as a grain exporter.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday, 4 July, that it did not think it would be possible to extend the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was launched last summer to allow the export of grain from Ukrainian ports.

On 17 May, the initiative was extended by two months despite Russia’s threats to withdraw from the agreement.

Background:

  • Russian forces launched 28 Shahed drones across Ukraine on the night of 10-11 July, 26 of which were shot down by the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
