Most Ukrainians support NATO membership before Vilnius summit
Support for joining the North Atlantic Alliance among Ukrainians remains very high as the NATO summit in Vilnius begins this week.
Source: survey of Ukrainians living in Ukraine and abroad conducted by the Rating sociology group
Details: According to the survey, NATO membership is supported by 83% of Ukrainians in Ukraine and 86% of those living in Europe. On the contrary, 6% of Ukrainians in Ukraine and 4% in Europe oppose joining the Alliance.
This is roughly the same as at the beginning of this year, when a record 86% of those living in Ukraine supported joining the Alliance.
While support for Ukraine's membership in NATO is high in all macro-regions of Ukraine, it is somewhat lower in the eastern regions: 74% of respondents there supported joining the Alliance, 8% were against it, and another 15% would not vote if the issue were put to a referendum.
The same survey showed that the majority of Ukrainians expect the NATO summit in Vilnius on 11-12 July to guarantee Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.
And if a referendum on Ukraine's membership in the European Union were held, it would be supported by 85% of Ukrainians living in Ukraine and 83% of those living abroad.
The survey in Ukraine covered 2,000 adult respondents in all oblasts except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas, as well as areas where Ukrainian cellular data was not available at the time of the survey. The representativeness error is no more than 2.2%.
Abroad, 2,000 Ukrainians aged over 18 were interviewed in 31 European countries, with a representativeness error of no more than 3.2%.
