Rain is expected in flooded Kherson Oblast
Meteorologists are predicting thunderstorms and hail in some areas in Kherson Oblast, now devastated by flooding after the Russians blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Details: According to weather forecasts, thunderstorms are expected in the oblast during 11-13 June, with precipitation in the form of hail in some places.
Squalls and gusts of wind are expected at speeds of 15-20 metres per second.
Background: Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson Oblast Military Administration, said that as of the morning of 9 June, the level of flooding in Kherson Oblast had finally begun to decrease − over the past night, the water level has subsided by 20 cm. The evacuation of people and animals continues.

Background:
- On the night of 6 June 2023, Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), destroying the plantʼs turbine hall and dam. The plant is beyond repair. The draining of the Kakhovka Reservoir threatens the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
- The destruction of the Kakhovka HPP has caused an ecological catastrophe. Water from the reservoir has begun to flood towns and villages, and evacuations of local residents from dangerous areas have begun. It has also caused problems with the drinking water supply in the towns of Kryvyi Rih, Marhanets and Nikopol.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the disaster at the Kakhovka HPP caused by Russia would neither stop Ukraine from liberating its own territory nor increase the chances of the occupiers staying on this land.
- Zelenskyy said he was shocked by the reaction of the UN and the Red Cross to the blowing up of the Kakhovka HPP by the Russian occupiers. He added that international organisations such as the Red Cross should immediately join in evacuating people from flooded cities and villages, in particular in the temporarily occupied territory, where Ukrainian military and emergency workers currently have no access.
