EU and NATO are not planning extraordinary meetings because of the events in Russia

Saturday, 24 June 2023, 13:43

Neither the European Union nor NATO plans to hold emergency meetings in connection with the armed rebellion in Russia.

As European Pravda writes, Radio Liberty correspondent Rikard Jozwiak reports this with reference to his sources.

According to him, Western allies are not planning urgent meetings due to the power struggle between the Wagner Group and the official structures of the Russian Federation.

"The EU ambassadors will meet on Monday morning in Luxembourg, and then the foreign ministers will meet - as planned. NATO is monitoring the situation; the Secretary-General will make statements to the press in Lithuania on Monday morning, as previously planned," Jozwiak said.

He also posted a comment from an EU spokesman on the situation in Russia without specifying whether the comment was made by the chief spokesman of the European Commission, Eric Mamer, or the spokesman for foreign affairs, Peter Stano.

The quoted official noted that the European Union is "closely monitoring the situation", is in touch with the ambassador in Moscow and is conducting internal consultations with member countries and partners.

"What we are observing are internal Russian issues," the spokesman added.

Background:

Since the evening of 23 June, a power struggle between the leader of the Wagner Group and the official Russian leadership has been taking place in Russia.

Prigozhin claims that he has taken control of military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, in particular the airfield, and is heading "towards Moscow", and that his soldiers have already shot down three Russian helicopters.

A counter-terrorist operation regime has been introduced in Moscow; Vladimir Putin has spoken about civil war and rebellion in a special address.

UK intelligence has stated that these events are the most serious challenge for Russia as a state in recent times.
