War in Ukraine will be main topic of German foreign minister's talks in South Africa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Baerbock, will leave for the Republic of South Africa on Sunday for a two-day visit, which will include talks on the war in Ukraine.

Details: On Monday, Baerbock will take part in meetings in Cape Town with a focus on overcoming the consequences of apartheid and the situation of LGBTQ people, the German Foreign Ministry said in Berlin on Friday.

Baerbock also plans to visit a German-funded company in Cape Town that is part of the World Health Organisation's vaccine hub. The goal is to promote the expansion of vaccine production on the African continent.

South Africa's relationship with Russia is expected to play an important role in Tuesday's political talks.

South Africa has officially declared itself neutral in the context of the war in Ukraine. President Cyril Ramaphosa recently visited Russia and Ukraine with an African delegation for mediation efforts.

Meanwhile, the BRICS summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is scheduled to take place in South Africa on 22-24 August.
