Strong stench appeared in Zaporizhzhia after draining of Dnipro River
A strong stench appeared in Zaporizhzhia after the draining of the Dnipro River due to Russia's blowing up of the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant.
Due to the hot weather, silt began to evaporate from the river, causing an unpleasant smell, Yuriy Malashko, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, reported.
"The sharp smell that appeared in the city is a consequence of the dehydration of the water artery. Since the water has receded from the banks, tens of bare metres of the seabed have been exposed to the direct rays of the sun," the head of the oblast noted.
According to Malashko, windless weather also contributes to the spread of unpleasant odours.
Monitoring of water composition indicators has been strengthened in the oblast, and additional sampling is being carried out.
"Unfortunately, we will have to suffer the consequences of the Russian military attack for a few more days before the situation is resolved," Malashko added.
Background: The explosion of the Kakhovka HPP caused the flooding of cemeteries, landfills, latrines, etc., so the water in the nearest settlements may become unfit for consumption, the Ministry of Health reported.
