Ukraine's Defence Ministry tallies up environmental costs of Russian attacks on Ukraine's military facilities in 2022
Environmental damage caused by the Russian attacks on Ukraine’s military facilities in 2022 amounted to 298 billion hryvnias (approximately US$8 billion).
Major Vladyslav Dudar, a representative of the Environmental Safety and Demining Department of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, reported on the environmental damage suffered by Ukraine during a roundtable discussion at the Military Media Center.
Dudar said that the Military Prosecutor’s Office and the Security Service of Ukraine have opened criminal proceedings for each incident.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry, together with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, assessed the situation in the areas that have been polluted due to combat actions.
"[In 2023], we inspected around 40 facilities and the State Environmental Inspection is currently calculating [the damages]," Dudar added.
Previously: Previous estimations indicated that the environmental damage caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine amounts to almost 2 trillion hryvnias (approximately US$54 billion).
