Streets related to Soviet past renamed in Kharkiv
Kharkiv City Council has changed the names of streets related to the Soviet past to new names that honour fallen Ukrainian defenders. The city will have streets named after fallen heroes Heorhii Tarasenko, Dmytro Kotsiubailo, Oleh Hromadskyi and Vladyslav Chernykh, and Gorky Park is to be renamed the Central Park of Culture and Recreation.

Quote: "Plekhanivska Street is now named after Heorhii Tarasenko, leader of the Freikorps [a volunteer battalion of Ukraine’s defence forces – ed.]; Derzhavinska Street after Dmytro Kotsiubailo, commander of the Da Vinci Wolves Battalion; Battleship Potemkin Street after Oleh Hromadskyi, the legendary battalion commander and National Guardsman; and the nameless square on Kontorska Street, opposite building 5, is named after combat medic Vladyslav Chernykh."
Details: The mayor said the names of Ukrainian heroes are worthy of being immortalised in people's memory.
Terekhov added that Kharkiv residents who have property on the renamed streets do not need to change their residence permits or property ownership documents.
In addition, Gorky Park has been renamed the Central Park of Culture and Recreation: "This name has long taken root among Kharkiv residents".
The mayor said all the decisions on renaming streets and squares were adopted unanimously by the members of the City Council.
