Russia's State Duma to consider draft law on prohibition of sex change operations

Tuesday, 30 May 2023, 20:38

A draft law has been submitted to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, prohibiting medical interventions aimed at changing sex.

Source: This is reported by the Russian propaganda agency TASS with reference to a document posted by Petr Tolstoy, the vice speaker of the State Duma, on Telegram.

Details: MPs of all five factions of the State Duma, almost 400 parliamentarians, submitted a draft law for consideration, which supplements the law "On the Basics of Health Protection of Citizens in the Russian Federation" with provisions that, in particular, "prohibit the implementation of medical interventions aimed at changing a person's sex."

At the same time, the draft law allows medical intervention for the treatment of congenital anomalies of genital organs in children.

Operations will be able to be carried out in accordance with the decision of the medical commission in hospitals approved for this purpose by the Russian government.

Quote: "Unfortunately, there are more and more such cases – the Western transgender industry is trying to seep into our country," Tolstoy believes.

Additionally, the draft law prohibits civil status registration authorities (CSRA) from changing or correcting a person's sex in documents based on a relevant certificate from a hospital.

A corresponding amendment is being made to the law "On Civil Status Acts", which currently allows the CSRA to change the notion of a person's sex in documents.

The draft law proposes to recognize this norm as invalid.

The deputy speaker of the State Duma explains the need to adopt the bill by saying that it is necessary to prevent "the infiltration of Western anti-family ideology."

Quote: "Why is this being done? We are preserving Russia for posterity - with its cultural and family values, traditional foundations, putting a barrier on the way to the penetration of Western anti-family ideology," the official added.

Reminder: Earlier, Uganda's president signed a law that provides for life imprisonment for LGBT representatives.
