Details: The aid package also includes missiles for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and more tank ammunition and anti-armour weapons.
Other munitions include Zuni unguided aircraft rockets and AIM-7 radar-guided air-to-air missiles; the US is also expected to provide Ukraine with Avenger air defence systems and Stinger surface-to-air missile systems, US officials told Voice of America.
This aid package for Ukraine will mark the 39th authorised presidential drawdown of military equipment from US Defense Department inventories since Russia’s full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022.
Background:
- On 21 May, the US Department of Defense announced additional security assistance to Ukraine, worth up to US$375 million, to cover Ukraine’s critical needs.
- According to the Pentagon, the US has committed a total of more than US$36.9 billion since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion on 24 February 2022. This has caused concern that it might soon run out of funds to support Ukraine.
- Reuters later reported that an accounting error in the Pentagon’s report overvalued Ukraine weapons aid by US$3 billion.
