Details: Russian military personnel raped a young woman during the occupation of a settlement in Kharkiv Oblast in 2022.
Ukraine’s law enforcement officers have identified the three men who committed the war crime.
One of them is a 43-year-old colonel, commander of the 99th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Motorised Rifle Division of the 20th Combined Arms Army of the Western Military District of the Russian Armed Forces. The other two were his subordinates: a 20-year-old private, who served as a driver, and a 24-year-old junior sergeant who was the commander of a command and control vehicle unit.
According to the investigation, the Russian military personnel came to the house where the woman lived with her family. At first, they threatened all of the house’s inhabitants with weapons, then they fired their machine guns at an outbuilding by the house. They then ordered everyone to hand all of their phones and other communication devices for a check.
Once they were sure that everyone in the building was a civilian, the Russians left the house.
They came back in the evening of the same day and ordered the woman’s relatives to remain in the building. They forced the woman into an armoured personnel carrier and took her to another house, where the commander was awaiting them. The Russians forced the woman to come with them by threatening to shoot her family.
They covered her eyes with a hood to prevent her from being able to tell where they were going and remembering the way there. The Russians undressed the girl in the vehicle.
Once in the building where the 43-year-old colonel was staying, the three military personnel took turns raping the woman. The colonel told his subordinates that he would go first.
After the settlement was liberated from the Russian occupation, the woman appealed to law enforcement agencies to bring the rapists to justice.
She sustained multiple injuries as a result of sexual violence. This was confirmed by the findings of a forensic medical examination.
Ukraine’s Security Service conducted an investigation and identified the three Russian occupiers who committed the gang rape: all of them were members of the 99th Artillery Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces.
According to the evidence obtained by the Security Service, the three perpetrators were served notices of suspicion under Art 28.2 and Art 438.1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war committed by a conspiring group of persons).
The Security Service is taking comprehensive measures to establish the whereabouts of the offenders and bring them to justice.
