German Foreign Minister snubs UN Security Council to avoid Russian Foreign Minister's "deceitful performance"
Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s Foreign Minister, was absent from this Monday’s UN Security Council meeting because she "did not want to listen to the lies" of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who chaired the meeting.
Source: Bild, a German tabloid, citing sources in German diplomatic circles
Details: Sources told Bild that Lavrov wants to continue with "business as usual" at the Security Council, all while Russia continues its brutal and illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
Baerbock declined the invitation to attend the Security Council meeting and instead focused on rescuing German citizens from Sudan.
German diplomats told Bild that Germany was "unavailable to take part in such cynical and transparent propaganda games".
During the meeting, Lavrov accused the West of wanting to alter the UN Charter against the will of the rest of the world. He evoked "nazis in Kyiv" and blamed the US for everything that is going on.
Background:
- On 1 April 2023, Russia took over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.
- In light of this, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for Security Council reforms "to prevent the terrorist state and every other state that acts like a terrorist from ruining peace".
- The Czech Foreign Minister supported Kyiv’s call for reforms, as did Turkey.
