The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has abandoned creating a demilitarised zone around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

Details: Negotiations on the safety zone lasted eight months.

According to Grossi, it is now a matter of cessation of hostilities near the nuclear power plant.

Quote: "We are well aware of the additional difficulties this [the creation of the zone – ed.] will bring, especially in the area of active hostilities.

It will be extremely difficult to conduct the verification process; more than one mile from the demilitarised zone, the area will be highly militarised. Therefore, we do not consider it anymore," Grossi said.

Quote: "I came to the conclusion that for various reasons, the territorial issue for Ukraine can also be considered as a legitimisation of the Russian presence," he explained the reasons for stopping the negotiations.

Previously:

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine stated that Ukraine’s position on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remains unchanged; the negotiations are ongoing, but the Russians are not coming up with anything constructive in these negotiations.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, stated that there is a viable solution for the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP temporarily seized by the Russians, which requires international support.
