Quote from Commander of Ukrainian Ground Forces: "The situation around Bakhmut remains difficult. Wagner's assault units are advancing from several directions, trying to break through the defence of our troops and advance to the central areas of the city."
Details: At the same time, Syrskyi added that in the course of fierce battles, Ukrainian soldiers are inflicting significant losses on the occupiers.
He emphasised that the defenders are repelling all Russian attempts to capture the city with artillery, tanks and other firepower, and the defence of the fortress [one of the names of Bakhmut] continues.
Background:
- On 9 March, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, said that the Defence Forces were not allowing the Russians to take the city into operational encirclement, but the situation remained complicated.
- On 12 March, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian forces had lost more than 1,100 killed and 1,500 wounded soldiers over less than a week on the Bakhmut front. More than ten ammunition storage points had been burned as well.
