Details: The ban appeared on the day when provisions of the law "On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection" took effect.

"The law implements the ban for a number of Russian companies to use foreign messengers," Roskomnadzor stated.

Thus, these messengers are prohibited for companies that fulfil the government orders or provide state services:

  • Discord
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Skype for Business
  • Snapchat
  • Telegram
  • Threema
  • Viber
  • WhatsApp
  • WeChat.

On 29 December 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that bans transmission of personal data via foreign messengers during provision of state services or fulfilment of government orders.
