Russia has lost up to half its tank fleet in war with Ukraine
Reports suggest that Russia has lost up to a half its tank fleet since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Ukraine.
Source: CNN, with reference to data provided by Oryx monitoring group and its analyst Jakub Janovsky.
Quote from CNN: "The group said this week it has verified 1,000 distinct Russian tank losses in the war. It said a further 544 Russian tanks had been captured by Ukrainian forces, 79 damaged and 65 abandoned."
Details: According to Oryx military analyst Jakub Janovsky, these statistics only include losses that the monitoring team was able to confirm. He estimates that the real number may be about 2,000 tanks.
"Russia started the war [full-scale invasion - ed.] with around 3,000 operational tanks … so there is a good chance that Russia has lost one half of (its) usable tanks," Janovsky added.
He said that before the start of the war, the Russian Federation had about 4,000 tanks in reserve. However, many of them have only survived "on paper". Thus, even if we assume that all of them can be repaired, the Russian Federation still lost about 30% of its pre-war tank fleet, according to Janovsky.
Oryx reports that the total number of losses of Russian equipment is almost 9,100 units. The total losses of Ukraine amount to 2,934 units of equipment.
At the same time, Ukraine haslost 459 tanks, and captured more than 500 Russian ones.
