British Challenger 2 tanks will be in Ukraine as soon as March – Sunak
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hinted that British Challenger 2 tanks will arrive in Ukraine as early as March 2023 and also announced the expansion of the training programme for Ukrainian servicemen.
Source: European Pravda reports that Sunak announced this at a joint briefing together with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after meeting with Ukrainian tank crew members currently learning how to master these machines.
Quote from Sunak: "Ukrainian crews, who arrived in Britain for training last week, will be able to utilise Challenger 2 tanks to protect the sovereign territory of Ukraine as soon as next month. I am proud that today we will expand that training programme, which 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already taken and passed, to include marines and fighter jet pilots."
Details: He added that Britain is making efforts to ensure that the necessary Western weaponry is delivered to Ukraine in the coming weeks, not months or years.
"We think it is right to provide both short-term equipment like Challenger tanks and additional guns, and longer-range capabilities that can help win the war now, but also to look to the medium to long term to make sure Ukraine has every possible capacity it requires."
Background: On 15 January, Britain confirmed plans to send Ukraine 14 Challenger 2 tanks and about 30 155mm AS90 self-propelled howitzers.
At the end of January, Ukrainian tank crews arrived in Great Britain for training on Challenger 2 tanks.
British Deputy Defence Minister Alex Chalk expressed hope that Challenger 2 tanks will arrive in Ukraine at the end of March.
