Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a new financial support package for Ukraine in the amount of US$5.5 billion.

He stated this while speaking at a global forum in Tokyo, AP reports.

"Ukraine is still suffering from the Russian invasion, and its people need help to restore their daily lives and infrastructure, which was severely damaged by the Russian attacks," Kishida said.

The head of the Japanese government, who is the current president of the G7, added that he would hold an online summit of the Group of Seven countries on the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.  President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also take part in the event.

Japan has joined the US and the EU in imposing sanctions against Russia over its invasion and providing humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine.

Reminder: The Japanese government is allocating US$170 million for Ukraine, which will be used for emergency recovery projects, including the repair of critical infrastructure.
