Details: Zelenskyy said that a "mutual understanding" has been reached during today’s negotiations with the President of the European Commission and members of the European Commission Board: "We must, through our further integration, give energy and motivation to our people to fight despite any obstacles and threats."

Quote from Zelenskyy: "I believe that Ukraine deserves to reach the beginning of negotiations on EU membership this year already. And I would like to thank Mrs President of the European Commission, her colleagues and our friends in the EU for their tangible support on the path of integration and in protecting our country and people."

Background: Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, said earlier today that the Ukrainian side will declare the beginning of preparations for negotiations on accession to the European Union at the Ukraine-EU summit on Friday, 3 February.

During her visit to Kyiv, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said that she believes that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union.

It is expected that after the summit, the leaders of Ukraine and the EU will confirm in writing that the future of Ukraine and its citizens is connected with the European Union. But in reality, the prospect of Ukraine joining the EU remains remote.
