Zelenskyy hands over list of necessary weapons to EU leaders in Brussels
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, has handed over lists of necessary weapons regarding new arms supplies during a meeting with EU leaders on Thursday.
Source: DPA, citing a high-ranking EU official, Spiegel reports.
According to the DPA’s source, Ukraine's requests were adjusted to the respective military reserves of the EU member states – this was intended to increase the pressure on individual states to provide more assistance to counter Russian aggression.
"What the Ukrainians are doing is very smart… They know exactly what they need and know what to ask for," a European official said.
When asked where Ukraine received information about the military stockpiles of EU member states, the interlocutor of DPA answered: "They are informed, they have contacts." According to him, it is not surprising that Ukrainians can oppose Russia with such intelligence capabilities.
Instead, DPA sources in the German government said on Friday that the German delegation did not receive a list of desired weapons from Zelenskyy. Instead, it was confirmed by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
It is quite possible, the agency suggests, that Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, did not receive the list, as they had previously held talks with Zelenskyy in Paris.
Background:
- On Thursday, Zelensky was in Brussels, where he took part in a European Union summit. During his speech at the event, he called on EU countries to introduce sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry, missile and drone manufacturers, and expressed hope he could start EU accession negotiations this year.
- As reported, the leaders of the European Union did not give Volodymyr Zelenskyy commitments to provide combat aircraft, although the Ukrainian president hinted at such agreements during the summit in Brussels on Thursday.
