Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine and its partners are working to prevent Russia from "taking revenge" on the battlefield.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "Today, as I do practically every day, I held several meetings with military officials and the head of defence intelligence. We thoroughly analyse the situation on all operational fronts and possible future developments: what the occupation forces are preparing to do and how we are already responding to Russia’s preparations for its attempted revenge.

Our defence and security forces, Ukraine’s government, our partners – we are all making efforts not only to prevent Russia from gaining ground on the battlefield, but also to take away the occupiers’ last hopes that their aggression might succeed.

With Russia’s defeat, a secure and lasting peace will become the only option. I am grateful to all our partners who are supporting Ukraine’s position."

Details: Zelenskyy said that he talked to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo on Tuesday, 31 January.

He and Prime Minister Trudeau discussed additional measures that could strengthen defence cooperation between Ukraine and Canada, as well as sanctions against Russia and the aggressor country’s isolation on the international arena.

Zelenskyy thanked de Croo for the defence aid package for Ukraine that Belgium has recently approved and discussed a new package of sanctions against Russia and cooperation to "protect sport and the Olympic movement from terror propaganda".

Background: Government representatives, intelligence and experts believe that Russia is preparing for a new offensive in February or March and that the next few months may be particularly difficult for Ukraine, but decisive in the war.
