Ukraine's Foreign Minister reveals amount of tanks Ukraine will receive in first wave of Western aid
Ukraine will obtain 120-140 modern Western tanks in the first wave of aid from the allies.
Source: Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, during a briefing on 31 January
Quote: "I may only note that in the first wave of aid, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive 120 to 140 units of modern Western tanks: Leopard 2, Challenger 2, M1 Abrams, and we are very much expecting Leclerc."
Details: Kuleba noted that the tank coalition currently has 12 members. However, it is still quite early to name these countries, as some of them have yet to make formal decisions.
He added that Ukraine continues to work on expanding the tank coalition and increasing the contributions of the previously announced participants.
Background:
- On 25 January, the German government decided to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBT).
- On the same day, US President Joe Biden confirmed his intention to transfer 31 M1 Abrams MBTs to Ukraine to strengthen its defence capabilities amidst Russian aggression.
- Norway will send German-made Leopard 2 MBTs to Ukraine as soon as possible, most likely in late March 2023.
