Slovakia ready to discuss transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine
Slovakia is ready to discuss the transfer of its MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine.
Source: Jaroslav Naď, Slovak Defence Minister, during an online briefing in media centre Odesa-Ukraine, reports European Pravda, citing UNIAN news agency
Details: "The aircraft are currently at one of Slovakia's bases, and at the moment we are ready to discuss the transfer of these aircraft to Ukraine. We are waiting for a decision from the Slovak government," said the Slovak Defence Minister.
He added that Slovakia’s government will take the interests of Ukraine’s government into account. The position of allied countries regarding this transfer will also be taken into account.
"We are currently discussing it; we would like to transfer them [aircraft – ed.] precisely to Ukraine," Naď emphasised.
Background:
- In December 2022, Rastislav Káčer, Slovak Foreign Minister, said that Slovakia plans to transfer its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine and that preparations for this could begin in the coming weeks.
- Since 1 September, Polish fighter jets have begun patrolling the airspace of Slovakia in accordance with the agreement between Warsaw and Bratislava regarding the protection of Slovakian airspace. It was believed that this agreement paved the way for the transfer of Slovak MiG-29s to Ukraine and that Slovakia would receive Western fighters instead.
