Background:
- During the meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (Ramstein format) on 20 January, 12 countries agreed to provide Ukraine with about 100 Leopard 2 tanks if the German government approves the re-export.
- Germany initially refused to grant such approval and refrained from transferring their Leopards, but on 25 January, the country's government nevertheless decided to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBT) and allowed partner countries to transfer tanks of this MBT model that are in service with their armies.
- The Executive Office of US President Joe Biden will send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a deal worth US$400 million.
