The decision was made by Finland’s president on 19 January based on the government's proposal. Replacing what Finland transfers to Ukraine will cost more than €400 million. The estimated cost of all the assistance that Finland has provided to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war, together with this package, is €590 million.
"The current package of defence material is clearly the largest one to date. Finland supplies heavy artillery and munitions to Ukraine," Defence Minister Mikko Savola said.
For security reasons, the detailed contents of the package and the approximate time of arrival of these weapons in Ukraine are not disclosed. The minister noted that it was formed taking into account the requests of Ukraine and what Finland could provide from its existing reserves.
The provision of some of these weapons was made possible thanks to bilateral cooperation between Finland and Sweden. On 20 January, the countries will sign a bilateral declaration stipulating that Sweden, if necessary, will help Finland compensate for what it donated to Ukraine. The defence ministries have considered what and how much they can give to Ukraine without jeopardising their own defence capabilities.
