Significant shortage in power system remains, all regions informed about consumption limits
The electricity consumption rate in Ukraine on 19 January is expected to be slightly lower than that on Wednesday, thanks to warm weather. But the power shortage in the system remains significant, and all regional power companies have been informed of the limits of consumption for the whole day, Ukrenergo company, the country's power regulator, has stated.
The state-owned company emphasises that electricity consumption on Thursday is projected to be slightly lower than on Wednesday. But the power deficit in the power system remains significant, especially during the evening peak, when generation can cover only three-quarters of consumption.
Ukrenergo reiterates that the reason for the shortage is that because of Russian missile and drone attacks, power plants (generating capacities) and the high-voltage network were damaged. The latest Russian attack that occurred on 14 January caused significant damage to several power units of thermal power plants.
All regional power companies have been informed of consumption limits for 19 January.
Ukrenergo noted that each regional power company in its region draws up schedules for planned hourly shutdowns, which should ensure the local power consumption at the level of the proven limit.
Exceeding the limits leads to risks of creating emergencies in the power system. Therefore, emergency shutdowns are used to prevent them.
"Yesterday, Ukrenergo completed the repair of an autotransformer at one of the substations in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Once again, they also restored the damaged power transmission line that connects the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with the Ukrainian power system, which provides it with power, preventing accidents.
Ukrenergo, electricity producers and regional power companies are constantly working to restore damaged facilities attacked by enemy attacks. However, after each subsequent Russian attack on the energy infrastructure, recovery becomes more difficult and takes more time," the report says.
