NATO Secretary General: Ukraine needs a "significant increase" in weapons at a pivotal moment in Russia's invasion

Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, has reiterated his call to increase the supply of weapons to Ukraine at what he states is a pivotal point in Russia's full-scale aggression.

Quote: "This is a pivotal moment in the war and the need for a significant increase in support for Ukraine. If we want a negotiated peaceful solution tomorrow, we need to provide more weapons today," explained Stoltenberg.

Details: The NATO Secretary General has confirmed that consultations are ongoing between the Alliance countries regarding the supply of tanks to Ukraine. At the same time, he welcomed Britain's decision to dispatch its Challenger 2 tanks to Kyiv.

Stoltenberg has stated that Ukraine needs more air defence systems and armour, but also ammunition, spare parts and maintenance capabilities to ensure that its existing weapons continue to function.

He has said the situation along the battlefronts has stabilised over the past few weeks, but the protracted and fierce battles in the city of Bakhmut in the east of Ukraine demonstrated the importance of providing more weapons to support Ukraine.

"(Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin has shown no sign of preparing for peace and therefore he must realise he cannot win on the battlefield," Stoltenberg added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mircea Geoană, the NATO Deputy Secretary General, said that the countries of the Alliance should prepare for the fact that Ukraine will need help for a long period of time, as Vladimir Putin is preparing for a long war.
