Quote: "Another echelon of the Russian Armed Forces arrived at the Chepino railway station (city of Vitebsk, Vitebsk Oblast). In total, it consisted of 40 wagons, including 15 passenger cars (about 750 people), 10 freight cars (in which equipment and ammunition were brought) and 15 platform wagons with wheeled and tracked equipment."

Details: Belaruski Hajun reported that the echelon was departing from Moskovka railway station in Omsk, Russia, from where it was dispatched on 3 January.

In addition, on 10 January, echelons of the Russian Federation were spotted on the Stovtsi-Baranovichi rail line, as well as in Gomel (two echelons), Baranovichi (two echelons), Yosypovychy, Orsha and Minsk.

Belaruski Hajun concludes that the nature of the movements of Russians indicates, firstly, the regrouping of the Russian troops in Belarus and, secondly, the rotation of a part of the Russian Federation's personnel that was trained at Belarusian training grounds. At the same time, currently the Russian Federation is not accumulating troops near the border with Ukraine.

Background:

  • In its latest review, Britain's intelligence agency said that while Russia was maintaining a large number of forces in Belarus, they were unlikely to constitute a credible offensive force, and the new deployment of Russian aircraft was not in preparation for any additional offensive operations against Ukraine.
  • On 11 January, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus said that it has increased air defence forces together with the Russian military, with units moving to assigned areas.
