Russia redeploys military aircraft following airfield explosions

The Russian Air Force has redeployed and dispersed strategic long-range aircraft following the explosions at Russian airfields on 5 December.

Source: Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, during the 24/7 national joint newscast on 8 and 9 December

Quote: "’Bavovniatko’ [here Ihnat means ‘explosions’ – ed.] is rocking military airfields, and the occupiers, as the saying goes, have disappeared somewhere. Not actually disappeared, but as military terminology puts it, they’ve been ‘redeployed’ to different airfields. They have dispersed their strategic long-range planes where possible, to places where they can be serviced, where there are appropriate runways that they can use."

There are no targets hit so far, as the intensity of [Russian] attacks has decreased."

Details: Ihnat added that many ordinary people in Russia, who had previously claimed that the war against Ukraine did not concern them, were feeling the consequences of Russian aggression.

Previously: Satellite images show that up to 10 Tu-22M bombers have disappeared from the Dyagilevo military airbase in Ryazan Oblast, Russia, since the explosions at Russian airfields on 5 December.

Background:

  • On the morning of 5 December, Russian media reported that a fuel tanker had exploded at an airfield near the Russian city of Ryazan, killing at least three people, and a drone had crashed into bomber jets at an airfield in Saratov Oblast.
  • The Russian Defence Ministry officially commented on the explosions at the Dyagilevo and Engels airfields, stating that the strikes were carried out by the "Kyiv regime".
  • The Ukrainian side has not claimed responsibility for the strikes. Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence noted that everything that happened on Russia’s territory was "the responsibility of the aggressor state".
