Turkish powerships for Ukraine can be located near Moldova and Romania

Thursday, 8 December 2022, 09:01

The Turkish company Karpowership is discussing sending powerships to Romania or Moldova and supplying Ukraine with electricity via power lines to help Ukraine’s energy grid.

Zeynep Harezi, Managing Director of Karpowership, stated this in an interview with Anadolu Agency.

The company is discussing the supply of up to 400 MW of power output to Ukraine using floating power plants. "We are currently negotiating with the United Nations and other aid organisations to find the right solution. We can send ships to Romania or Moldova and supply Ukraine with electricity through power lines," Harezi said.

Harezi stated that any property going to Ukraine cannot be insured at the moment, so they cannot be sure of the safety of the ships. Therefore, although the ships were initially planned to be located near the Ukrainian city of Odesa, and the company representatives met with the Odesa Oblast authorities, the plans had to be changed.

"There are power lines connecting Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. We can place ships in Romania and Moldova and supply electricity to Ukraine via the power lines," the managing director explained.

This solves the insurance problem: "We are negotiating about 300-400 megawatts of output. This output can provide electricity to one million households. We can send three to four ships to provide this output," Harezi said.

The vessels can be stationed in different harbours. Floating power plants can start supplying electricity within a month after technical, commercial and safety issues are resolved.

Harezi added that the company is offering electricity at a price below the cost of electricity generation in Moldova and Romania and below the cost of the European energy pool.
