Ukrainian troops start training in Czech Republic
Ukrainian servicemen are now undergoing military training at the Libavá training ground of the Czech Armed Forces under the leadership of their Czech counterparts.
This information was confirmed to Czech media outlet iDNES by Major General Karel Řehka, Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces, European Pravda reports.
"Ukrainian soldiers are already in the Czech Republic in the Libavá military area for a planned exercise," Řehka said.
The Czech government has offered five four-week training courses, to be held by the end of next year. Up to 800 Ukrainian servicemen can take part in each one.
The training in the Libavá military area was approved by the Czech parliament last week.
The Czech Senate has also supported sending Czech military personnel to train Ukrainians in other EU countries. The Czech Republic will be able to send up to 55 military personnel to participate in the EU’s military training mission for Ukrainians.
The training is based on bilateral agreements between the governments of the Czech Republic and Ukraine. In the future, according to the agreements, this process of military training may transfer to the EU mission, and the EU could reimburse the Czech Republic for part of the costs, estimated at CZK 975 million (about US$36 million).
Background: The new EU training mission for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) has reportedly reached full operational readiness.
