Quote: "Kreminna is a gateway to two much larger cities nearby, Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, important industrial centers in the Donbas region.
Retaking the city and other towns nearby would expand the Ukrainians’ foothold in the region, and give them control of major roads leading to Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk."
Details: The NYT reports that there was fighting around the city on Tuesday, and Ukrainian troops were edging closer to liberating Kreminna. But, according to the newspaper, the Russians are trying to defend one of the most hardest-fought gains they have made in this war. After a series of retreats, the Russian military has fortified its positions near Kreminna with defensive barriers.
Background:
- Hanna Maliar, the Deputy Defence Minister of Ukraine, earlier reported that the Russian occupiers have set a goal to reach the administrative border of the Donetsk Oblast by the end of this year.
- Serhii Haidai, Head of Luhansk Oblast Military Administration, said on 27 December that the Russian occupiers' counterattacks are bearing no fruit on the Svatove-Kreminna front, and the Ukrainian defenders are a few kilometres away from Kreminna.
