Not just tea party: Lukashenko speaks of his meeting with Putin

Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus said that his informal meeting with the President of the Russian Federation involved agreeing on a lot of questions, which "sometimes require years in other countries."

Source: Belarusian state-owned media outlet BelTa with reference to Lukashenko’s statement during his meeting with Putin in St Petersburg. 

Lukashenko Quote: "If someone is thinking that our meeting boils down just to tea drinking, I’ll have to say that yesterday wasn’t just a tea party; later in the evening, coming back home, we discussed a lot of pressing issues. Sometimes a lot of countries require years for that, and we brought a lot of questions to a close, continuing our dialogue in Minsk, as it was mainly concerning economics."

Details: Lukashenko thanked the Russian dictator for "agreeing on a set of questions" on 26 December. 

According to Lukashenko, it is now up to the governments to negotiate the terms. What agreements are exactly in the question, he does not specify. 

An informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States [an alliance between ten former republics of the Soviet Union – ed.] is taking place in St Petersburg.

  • On 19 December, Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who has ruled the country for more than 20 years, met in Minsk (Belarus).
  • According to Putin, the two discussed joint production of military vehicles, further drills and the training of Belarusian military pilots. 
  • Lukashenko bragged that an S-400 air defence system and an Iskander missile system were already on combat duty in his country.
  • On 24 December, Lukashenko flew to meet Putin in Russia.
