In Russian Chuvashia, an explosion hit the main gas pipeline Urengoy – Pomary – Uzhhorod, which caused a fire; three people died as a result.

Details: The explosion rocked the gas pipeline between the villages of Kalinino and Yambakhtino of the Vurnar Raion of Chuvashia. According to preliminary reports, there was a gas leak. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation staff went to the place.

Update: The city mayor’s press service reports that before the fire, works were being carried out by an exploiting organisation.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the fire on the gas pipeline started during scheduled repair work. According to the Ministry, gas flaring has been eliminated. The breakthrough occurred during planned repair work on the section of the main underground gas pipeline with a diameter of 1,420 mm.

Background: Russian RBC TV notes that this is an export Russian gas pipeline built in the early 1980s. It transports gas from Western Siberia to Europe. The gas pipeline crosses the Russian-Ukrainian border around the Sudzha gas station in the Kursk Oblast. It also has branches to the TurkStream gas pipeline and to Central Asia.
