Russian missile attack deals damage to about 9 power generation facilities – Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy

The Russian missile attack on the morning of 16 December has resulted in damage to about 9 power generation facilities and curtailed the production of nuclear power plants.

Quote: "What we already see is damage to about nine generation facilities. We are still clarifying [the level of that] damage. Accordingly, the substations that transmit electricity are damaged, which led to the curtailing of production, first of all, of nuclear generation," the Minister stressed.

Details: According to him, the consequences of the missile strike are currently being recorded, and the situation is being analysed to increase the electricity output in the near future.

Quote: "We will currently try to get nuclear power plants to the system back as soon as possible," he added.

Details: At the same time, he noted that the situation in Kharkiv would be difficult.

Quote: "I do not want to specify the facilities that have been hit; we will try to restore them as soon as possible," said Halushchenko.

Details: The Minister has added it is not the first time that Russian aggressors are trying to hit both generation and distribution facilities; he called their actions as "just another terrorist attack".

Commenting on the report by Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national power company, regarding the loss of 50% of consumption all over the country following the latest attack, he explained that this means the inability to supply electricity to half of the consumers.

Quote: "I ask people to understand the emergency outages and I assure you that we will do everything and even more to restore [the power system – ed.] as soon as possible," the Minister concluded.

There have been hits reported following the massive Russian-launched missile strike on the power infrastructure of Ukraine on 16 December; the country's north, south and centre suffered most of the damage. The state of emergency was introduced for electricity market participants.
