US citizen Suedi Murekezi, who was detained by the Russian invaders in occupied Kherson in June, has been released from captivity and brought back to the territory controlled by Ukraine.

It is stated by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, European Pravda reports.

"A civilian, a US citizen, 35-year-old Suedi Murekezi, was released. He was captured by the occupiers in Kherson back in June, allegedly "for participating in pro-Ukrainian protests," the Ministry’s post on Facebook says.

Murekezi was detained on 10 June by Russian occupation forces in Kherson, where he had been living for more than three years. He spent most of his time in captivity in two different prisons with a group of foreigners fighting on the side of Ukraine.

The American himself and his close friends and relatives claim that he did not take part in hostilities in Ukraine. "It became clear to the Russian authorities that I had nothing to do with the hostilities, but they still kept me in prison," he told journalists.

In late October, as Murekezi states, he was released from a prison in Donetsk, but he could not leave the city, because the militants did not give him back his IDs.

In early December, it was reported that Murekezi was still staying in Donetsk because he could not leave without the documents.
