Five militants involved in occupation of Mariupol and Sievierodonetsk receive prison sentences

Five militants from illegal armed groups in the "L/DPR" [the so-called Luhansk/Donetsk People’s Republics] who took part in the occupation of Mariupol and Sievierodonetsk will spend 10 to 13 years behind bars.

Details: According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), four militants who took part in the occupation of Sievierodonetsk have been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

They were captured by Ukrainian forces during hostilities near the settlement of Bilohorivka, Luhansk Oblast.

According to the investigation, the detainees were locals who had joined the so-called "4th Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade of the LPR", which was part of the 2nd Army Corps of the Russian Federation, even before the full-scale aggression.

They fought in battles against the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Luhansk front.

Based on the evidence collected, the court found the defendants guilty of high treason, participation in the activity of a terrorist organization, and participation in the activities of illegal armed groups.

The fifth militant was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The SSU established that he was a member of the so-called "105th DPR rifle regiment" of the 1st Army Corps of the Russian Federation. While serving in the ranks of the occupying group, he took part in the occupation of Mariupol and other settlements situated in Pryazovia [the north coast of the Sea of Azov].

In July 2022, the defendant’s unit was redeployed near the city of Marinka, Donetsk Oblast, where the invaders set up combat positions using armoured vehicles.

However, Ukrainian troops destroyed the Russian infantry fighting vehicle in which the defendant was travelling and detained him.

The court found him guilty under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
