Details: It has been reported that Mikhail Sheremet, the so-called member of the State Duma [lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia - ed.] from Crimea, has proposed that the term of service in the army be increased to two years. According to Sheremet, this is a necessary measure that should be introduced as soon as possible.

Viktor Bondarev, Head of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security, also called for the return of the two-year term of conscription in Russia; the committee will hold consultations on this issue with law enforcement agencies.

Quote from Bondarev: "Of course, I support this. It is necessary to introduce a two-year term of [conscription - ed.] service. I welcome this proposal and I think it is absolutely right. I think we [Federation Council Committee - ed.] will consult with the Ministry of Defence, and other law enforcement agencies, where conscription is envisaged. I think it will all be supported; we have no other choice."

Details: According to Bondarev, nowadays technology is improving, the world is moving forward, the Russian Armed Forces are being supplied with new systems and new equipment, and "it is impossible to learn how to use them in one year".

At the same time, Bondarev could not predict the time frame in which such a decision could be made.

He also believes that service on the ships of the Russian Navy should also last for two years.

Previously, conscripts served in the ground forces for two years and in the Navy for three years.
